Celebrating a 17th Birthday with All Ages in Tow

Looking for a day trip that delights toddlers, teens, and everyone in between? The Portland Zoo is a perfect choice—and a recent visit proves it! On July 7, my daughter took her three girls, ages 4 to 17, to celebrate one of her daughter’s birthdays. With animals, exhibits, and just the right mix of fun and learning, the day was a hit for the whole crew.

A Birthday to Roar About

What better way to spend your 17th birthday than with your sisters and a few hundred animal friends? From big cats to tiny fish, the girls got up close (but not too close) to creatures from around the world. Even the teenagers had a blast—and anyone with teens knows that’s saying something!

Monkeys, Tigers, and Flamingos—Oh My!

The monkeys were a family favorite—swinging through the branches and nets and putting on a show. The tiger looked both majestic and totally unimpressed with the crowd, while the flamingos flaunted their famous pink plumage like they knew they were the stars of the pond.

A Giraffe’s-Eye View

Next up was the giraffe—always a zoo crowd-pleaser. Towering over the crowd, it calmly munched on greenery while the girls marveled at its height and grace. Even the four-year-old stopped in her tracks to stare (and let’s just say, she usually doesn’t stay still for long).

The Hyena and the Fish Tank: Unexpected Hits

The hyena was another surprise favorite. Something about that sly grin and laid-back attitude had the girls giggling. And don’t underestimate the power of a good fish tank—mesmerizing colors, graceful movement, and a moment of calm in a busy zoo day.

A Day for the Memory Books

By the end of the day, there were tired feet, big smiles, and a phone full of animal selfies. From youngest to oldest, everyone left with a favorite animal and a fun memory. Whether you're local or making a day trip from the Puget Sound area, the Portland Zoo is a fantastic stop for families.

Planning a visit? Wear comfy shoes, bring snacks and water, and prepare to be amazed by the animal kingdom!
