Zebras in Idaho?!?
Over 3 million years ago, during the Pliocene age, this area looked much different than you see it now. This was an area of forests, wetlands and grasslands, where you may have found mastodons, saber-toothed cats, pelicans and zebras. It is also where you will find the world's most complete example of the Hagerman Horse or Equus simplicidens in the Visitor Center.
You can start your adventure at the Visitor Center one mile north of Hagerman on US Highway 30 and see exhibits of fossils, learn where to find the fossil beds, listen to ranger talks and visit the gift shop. You will see fossils here at the Visitor Center - you won't see them at the fossil beds.
The fossil beds are south of town and from the overlook, you can look across the water to where the fossils beds actually are.
If you are hungry, be sure to stop at the Snake River Grill, where you can have BBQ pork or trout, or what about sturgeon or alligator! Yes, alligator! We stopped for breakfast and had a great breakfast - no alligator for us! - and also had a chance to talk with the owner, who was a cheerful, fun, energetic person with a great sense of humor! Across the street from the Snake River Grill is the Hagerman Museum. It was closed when we were there so we weren't able to see what they have.
We also enjoyed stopping by an impressive bronze exhibit in memory of pioneer sheep families.
